For 48 years, Coleman Health Services has been helping Ohioans find hope, stability, and a path toward a healthier and more independent life. Founded in 1978 as a nonprofit community behavioral health organization in Portage County, Coleman has grown into a nationally recognized provider offering comprehensive behavioral health, residential, employment, crisis, and supportive services throughout Ohio. Today, Coleman serves children, adults, families, and communities with a simple but powerful mission: Fostering Recovery, Building Independence, and Changing Destinies. 

What makes Coleman unique is its commitment to whole person care. Mental health, substance use, housing, employment, family stability, and physical well-being are often connected. The organization currently provides services across more than 57 Ohio counties, connecting people with support close to where they live. 

Mental Health Services

Mental health care is at the heart of Coleman’s work. Services include behavioral health assessments, individual and group counseling, case management, psychiatry, medication support, peer services, and specialized programs. Coleman works with people experiencing challenges ranging from anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mental health conditions to more complex behavioral health needs.

Coleman also provides specialized support for individuals experiencing a first episode of psychosis, as well as programs designed to help children, adolescents, adults, and families. By combining clinical care with peer support and other community resources, Coleman helps clients develop practical tools for recovery and long-term wellness. 

Addiction and Recovery Services

Substance use disorders can affect every part of a person’s life, which is why Coleman takes a comprehensive approach to addiction treatment and recovery. Services can include assessments, outpatient treatment, crisis stabilization, case management, and other community-based resources.

The combination of clinical treatment and other support helps individuals address not only substance use, but also the housing, employment, relationships, and daily-life challenges that can influence recovery. 

Crisis Services

When someone is experiencing a mental health or substance use crisis, timely support can make an enormous difference. Coleman provides crisis response, intervention, and stabilization services designed to help people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Coleman offers 24/7 access in many communities across the state, helping connect individuals with appropriate care and support. For children and young people, Coleman also provides specialized programs, including OhioRISE services and Mobile Response and Stabilization Services (MRSS). Whenever a crisis occurs, dialing 988 can connect you to the right resources.

Housing and Residential Services

Stable housing is an important foundation for recovery and independence. Coleman provides residential and housing services designed to help people move from instability toward a safe and sustainable living environment.

Programs include supportive group living, housing assistance, residential services, and transitional housing opportunities for young adults. Coleman’s transition-age youth apartments in Portage and Stark Counties, for example, help young adults who may have aged out of the foster system or experienced other challenges develop skills such as cooking, budgeting, communication, and other daily living abilities while receiving professional support. 

Employment Services

A job can provide more than a paycheck. It can provide purpose, confidence, independence, and connection to the community. Coleman’s employment services help people identify their strengths, develop job skills, complete education, find employment, prepare for interviews, build resumes, and overcome barriers such as transportation.

These services are especially important for individuals living with disabilities or behavioral health challenges who want to become more financially independent and achieve their personal employment goals. 

Supportive Services for Individuals and Families

Coleman’s work extends beyond traditional behavioral health care. Supportive services include guardianship, adult day services, jail liaison support, and other programs designed to help vulnerable Ohioans and their families.

Coleman also supports veterans and their families through mental health, crisis, employment, and social support services. Through these programs, the organization recognizes that successful recovery often requires assistance with many aspects of everyday life, not simply clinical treatment. 

Care Management- OhioRISE

OhioRISE is a specialized Medicaid managed care program serving Ohio children and youth who have complex behavioral health and multi-system needs and is available across Ohio. The RISE in the program’s name stands for Resilience through Integrated Systems and Excellence, highlighting its mission to provide comprehensive care that meets the needs of each unique individual. Coleman Health Services is proud to partner with OhioRISE as a Care Management Entity, helping connect kids and families in Ashland, Holmes, Portage, Richland, Summit, and Wayne Counties with the wraparound care they need.

OhioRISE brings together multiple providers and organizations to ensure children and youth have their needs met through a care plan that values kids’ and families’ voices.
