COLUMBUS, Ohio – Signal Ohio CEO Rita McNeil Danish took part in a panel discussion yesterday (Aug. 21) at the Columbus Metropolitan Club entitled “Real News, Fake News, and How Journalism Can Save Democracy.”

She was joined on stage by Dr. Kelly Garrett, Director, School of Communication at The Ohio State University, and by Michael Shearer, Executive Editor of The Columbus Dispatch. The discussion was moderated by Rodney Dunigan, Assistant News Director with ABC 6.

During the talk, McNeil Danish stressed how Signal newsrooms are trying to build trust in communities, especially those that have lost trust in journalists.

“We are constantly in touch with the community. We are constantly doing surveys. We are constantly reaching out. We are doing library hours to connect with the community who may not have internet access. We are making sure we meet the community where they are so that we can build that trust with them. So that we can explain to them how we can be a trusted source, the power of information…Let’s go back to grassroots. Let’s go back to the front porch. Let’s talk about the issues that matter to them, what is important to them. And let them know that we hear them.”
